Andrea Becomes First Named Storm of 2007 Hurricane Season

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Even though the hurricane season doesn’t officially start for another three weeks, the National Hurricane Center has named the subtropical depression that has been affecting the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Georgia as Subtropical Storm Andrea. You can follow her progress here.

Here is a satellite image of the storm shortly before noon on Wednesday:

Of course, this storm didn’t get started in the tropics. Instead, it is the result of the lingering low pressure system that came through the Atlanta area last week. The storm is expected to move south over the next few days, before becoming a depression this weekend off the Florida coast. While it’s too early to tell exactly what will happen, because the storm is over the Atlantic, it isn’t likely to bring a lot of rain to the parched areas of south Georgia, and aside from some gusty winds, probably won’t affect Atlanta too much, either.
