Labor Day Outlook: Wet in North Georgia

Labor Day weekend may turn out to be a battle between a low pressure system in South Georgia and a ridge trying to enter our area from the northeast. Thursday’s round of thunderstorms marked the edge of a surface trough now located along a Macon to Augusta line. That trough is expected to hang around for the weekend over middle to south Georgia.

Meanwhile, a high pressure system in the Midwest is expected to push a cold front across the mid-Atlantic states, and it could possibly extend as far as our area by the end of the weekend. With these two competing weather patterns, what will we see?

The general consensus seems to be that the rain will win over, especially the further south and west you go. Here’s what the HPC thinks the amount of rain will be for the next three days:

Predicted Rainfall over the next three days

While there’s still going to be a struggle between the approaching ridge from the north and the trough to the south, it still looks like rain. If you’re a Georgia fan, bring an umbrella to Sanford Stadium Saturday night for the Dogs opening game. Tech fans don’t have anything to worry about, since the forecast for South Bend is sunny and 80 degrees on Saturday.

Wet weather could stick around a while, as both the 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks call for above normal precipitation in Georgia. They also call for above normal temperatures. It also looks like there’s a resonable chance of something developing along the tropical front, with the National Hurricane Center keeping its eyes on five separate areas that could develop into named storms by the time we go back to work on Tuesday.

One final note: this week, I’ve been working on converting to a new blogging platform. Instead of using Blogger, I’ve moved to Wordpress–which meant copying over 300 previous posts to the new system. You’ll notice the tag cloud to the right that highlights some of the topics I’ve written about over the past 2 1/2 years, which is a feature of the new system. Unfortunately, I lost the comments left under the previous system, but I think that the new one makes it easier for you to comment, and I invited you to express your opinions.

Noted the change earlier this week. Like the new “wordpress” format. What a lot of work. Kudos. kzipperer

Glad you liked it. Overall, the switch will make everything easier to manage for me, and will make it easier for people to find older postings that they are searching for.

For some reason, you comment was held until I could approve it. I’m not sure why that happened, since I haven’t set it up to require moderation. I guess I’ll have to do some research over the weekend. In any case, if you submit a response and it doesn’t show up immediately, don’t worry. I’ll get to it as soon as I can.
