Cold Blast Likely Next Weekend

For many folks, Spring fever is in the air. If you go to your home center, you’ll see that summer annuals are in stock. Bradford Pears are beginning to bloom. But, there is likely to be one more cold blast (at least) before we can officially call a start to spring.

After a rather unsettled week coming up, with at least some chance of nuisance precipitation on most days a round of cold Alaskan air will be on the menu beginning next weekend. This won’t be anything like the 20 degree weather we saw in February, but it is likely to mean clouds and temperatures only in the 50s for the NASCAR race in Atlanta next Sunday. For some reason, that race always seems to bring in the bad weather. From Saturday the 17th through Wednesday the 21st, look for highs only in the low 60s, and lows in the low 40s. After that, however, it looks like warmer times are ahead to round out the month.

A year ago Monday, it was 83 degrees here in Lawrenceville, the high temperature for the month. The Atlanta area typically breaks 80 degrees once or twice during March, but so far, the record this year is 73. We’ve got a crack at beating 75 on Tuesday before the rain comes in, but then, clouds and then the cold snap will keep warmer weather away through the last weekend of the month. By my records, the last time it didn’t get to 80 in March was 2003. We’ll have to wait and see if that record stands through this year.
