Atlanta Sets Record High for January 15th
Temperatures in Atlanta today reached a high of 73 degrees at 2:22 PM., besting the previous record of 72, set back in 1950. With a low this morning of 59 degrees, today’s weather looked more typical of what we would see in April. Here in Lawrenceville, it got to 71.8 at 2:49 PM. These temperatures are more than 20 degrees above normal.
Meanwhile, in Phoenix, Arizona, produce growers are panicking at record low temperatures. They have had temperatures below 30 degrees Sunday and Monday mornings, and are expecting freezing temperatures again tonight. That’s the coldest stretch they’ve had since 1978.
Tomorrow, we’re should see a relatively unusual weather event, with the temperature at midnight being the high for the day. Overnight rain should end by midday, and usher in more reasonable winter temperatures. After a sunny day on Wednesday, there’s a chance of sleet and/or freezing rain for Wednesday night and Thursday, however it doesn’t look like there is a lot of moisture out there to work with, and I haven’t seen any panic buttons being pushed yet.
The really cold weather doesn’t arrive until next week, when temperatures could reach 20 degrees. I feel sorry for the brave Star Magnolias, which are bravely blooming now along Ronald Reagan Parkway, and elsewhere in the county. They, and some other plants which should be blooming in March, including the Weigelas I’ve seen blooming on Oak Road have been confused by our unusual weather. Through the first half of the month, our mean temperature of 50.6 degrees is about what we would normally see in the first two weeks of March.
