Warmest Night of the Year in Northeast

Parts of the northeast and Mid-Atlantic states will get little overnight relief from the heat for the next few days. We tend to think of heat problems being excessively high temperatures during the day, but when it doesn’t get below 80 degrees overnight, it becomes difficult to sleep.

Here are some forecast lows for the next few days. Remember, these are lows, not highs.

New York City - Low Thurs. AM - 87 High Thursday - 100 Low Friday AM - 80
Philadelphia - Low Thurs. AM - 85 High Thursday - 99 Low Friday AM - 75
Washington, DC - Low Thurs. AM - 79 High Thursday - 100 Low Friday AM - 80
Nag’s Head, NC - Low Thurs. AM - 81 High Thursday - 91 Low Friday AM - 81
Atlanta - Low Thurs. AM - 75 High Thursday - 95 Low Friday AM - 71

The excessively warm overnight temperatures will primarily be along the Atlantic Coast from New York City to Charleston. Part of the problem is caused by the population density along the coast — with so many air conditioners and people, it’s hard to cool off. But, another factor is the extremely warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic. These warm water temperatures are what is also posing a potential hurricane threat sometime this summer.
