Summer Weather Arrives Just In Time for Memorial Day

It’s like someone somewhere flipped a switch, and suddenly we’re in a typical Atlanta summer weather pattern. On Friday the 19th, temperatures were five degrees below normal. The next day, five degrees above normal, and since then, continued warm weather.

In tandem with the increase in temperatures, severe afternoon thunderstorms struck parts of North Georgia over the last two days, but not all areas. Most of the worst of the weather hit northern and western parts of the metro Atlanta area. Even though Gwinnett had severe thunderstorm warnings on both days, I only recorded four hundredths of an inch of rain.

The abnormally dry weather continues to be a concern throughout most of Georgia. The map below, courtesy of georgiadrought.org, shows the change from normal precipitation through May 26th:

The change to the summer weather pattern means that what rain we’re likely to get over the next few months will be as a result of these thunderstorms, or from remnants of tropical storms. The good news is that for most of the long weekend, you’ll be able to enjoy being outside without getting too wet.

And, for those of you that think it’s too early for midsummer conditions, be patient. Long range forecasts call for highs below 80 degrees (actually cooler than normal) after next weekend.
