Who’ll Stop the Rain?
It may seem like we’ve had plenty of rain so far this year but actually, we have had almost 3/4 of an inch less than would normally be expected for the end of February, even accounting for the half an inch we had today.
Normal rainfall through today is 9.02 inches, while I’ve recorded 8.28 inches - about a 10% deficit.
Part of the reason it seems so wet is that it has rained every weekend since January 22nd - our fifth weekend in a row of wet weather. When the rain has been on Saturday, it’s been followed by a cold, windy Sunday, as high pressure moves in following the storm. And, don’t look now, but long-range forecasts call for rain the first two weekends of March.
Another reason it seems like it’s been so wet is that much of the rainfall has been in dribs and drabs, with a third or a tenth of an inch falling across an entire day, but ruining the whole thing, weather-wise.
All of this is no fun when you’re hoping to go out and play soccer, practice your golf game, or get your lawn and garden into shape for spring. The good news is that we appear to be moving into a period with a dryer pattern. Once the current low moves out overnight, we’ll get the gusts and the cold tomorrow, but should stay dry until the aforementioned storm arrives late next weekend, although there is a slight change of some rain on Thursday.
After that, it’s clear sailing for the second week of the month, but, it’s likely to be cooler than normal, with temperatures struggling to get out of the low 50s during the day, and dropping to around freezing at night.
Remember the old saying, though: March is the month that comes in like a lion, but goes out like a lamb.
