More Winter Weather Likely Before Christmas
In my comments on the freezing rain we had this morning, I mentioned that there were going to be some more possibilities of frozen precipitation before Christmas. While neither one is an absolute certainty, both storms merit watching.
The first chance of bad weather occurs on Saturday night or Sunday. Unlike today’s storm, which was greatly affected by the cold air wedging over the mountains, the weekend storm will bring its own cold air with it. The fast moving storm is likely to move into the area on Saturday afternoon, with the real chance of sleet, snow, or freezing rain overnight and into Sunday morning. In this case, the question is going to be whether it will be cold enough to do more than rain.
The second change of bad weather is on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. Again, cold weather is expected to move south from the Ohio valley into Tennessee and North Georgia as another low pressure system moves across the Gulf of Mexico and up the Atlantic coast. While the path of the storm still uncertain, if it tracks far enough north, we have another chance of sleet or snow.
All of this amounts to a lot of typically winter weather, and we haven’t even reached Christmas yet. Last year, everyone was amazed at the possibility (unrealized in Atlanta) of a white Christmas this far south. It makes you wonder what January and February, traditionally our worst months for winter weather, will bring.
And the weather for Christmas day itself? Right now, it looks like after whatever we get on Wednesday/Thursday, we have a few days of cold and clear weather before the next storm arrives on Christmas night, and brings yet another chance of nasty weather.
