Look for Hot Weather Until the End of the Month
Atlanta’s weather for the last few days has been what forecasters would call typical to just slightly warmer than normal. In other words, hazy, hot, and humid, with hit or miss showers that cool things off at the end of the day.
When I first moved to the area 25 years ago, that’s what my boss told me was normal. Of course, that was the summer of 1980, when temperatures in July reached 105 degrees during the day, seemingly without any relief.
Our weather, fortunately, won’t be getting that warm, but it’s expected to stay hot through the end of the month, with a greater than normal chance of rain. As we move into the first week of August, expect more seasonable temperatures, with still a greater than normal chance of rain.
The Weather Service has issued its long range outlook for all of August, and for most of the country, including the southeast, there are equal chances of above or below normal temperatures and precipitation. It seems that none of the long range forecasting models used by their meteorologists were able to sense anything out of the ordinary. They even went and tested the theory that tropical weather, which has given us so much rain during July, would account for a greater chance of rain in August, but it appears that the greatest probability of that happening isn’t until September. So, it looks like, at least at this point, we’ll get what we’ll get.
By the way, do you realize that we’ve already lost more than 20 minutes of daylight. The longest day was a month ago, on June 21st. The loss of daylight isn’t that noticeable, since it’s mostly occurred due to a later sunrise. The loss of evening daylight will begin to pick up now that we are approaching August.
