Chance of Record Low Temperatures Through Monday
There is a reasonable chance of record low temperatures both early Sunday and Monday mornings. In Atlanta, the record low for April 24th was 38 degrees, while Athens’ record was 36 degrees, both set in 1986. For April 25th, Atlanta dropped to 32 degrees in 1910, while Athens hit 36 degrees in 1974.
I’ve taken a look at some of the forecast models for the next 36 hours, and I think that Saturday night’s low temperatures in Gwinnett won’t drop below freezing, although the North Georgia mountains may see 32 degrees. For Sunday night and early Monday morning, freezing temps are possible, maybe even probable. By then, the winds will have died down, increasing the probability of heat loss through the night.
Of course, if we do reach freezing, it won’t be for very long. Unlike the winter, when temperatures drop below freezing shortly after sunset, and may take several hours after sunrise to climb above 32 degrees, any temperatures colder than freezing will likely take place for only an hour or two around sunrise.
Nonetheless, I wouldn’t recommend going to the garden center on Sunday to get that flat of annuals. I’m not planning to move my container plants to the garage tonight, however, I expect to do so Sunday night.
