This Week: Thunder, then Cold

This week, we’ll see the effects of a cold front that will pass through the area overnight on Monday, into Tuesday. The front, which will stretch from a low pressure system currently over the northern plains states southward will have the potential of bringing thunderstorms to Gwinnett as it passes through, and could leave us with about half an inch of rain.

The bad weather passes through quickly, though, and by Tuesday afternoon, it should be sunny, although much cooler than what we’ve seen over the last few days. Expect high temperatures in the low 50s, and low temps hovering around the freezing mark until the weekend. This is about 10 degrees below what we should be seeing by this time in March.

Through next weekend, several short wave fronts will pass from west to east, bringing a chance of precipitation, however it looks like most of the activity will be to our north. There is still a chance of rain Wednesday night into Thursday, and again Friday night into Saturday. Because of the cold air, and the fact that the weather is being driven by the northern branch of the jetstream, frozen precipitation is possible through Tennessee and North Carolina, and could impact the north Georgia mountains, although at this point, it’s not expected to come this far south.

The start of the week of the 14th is also likely to be rainy, although models show that the precipitation will be coming from the southwest, so it will be a bit warmer, with the temps being much closer to normal.

And, as an early warning to Atlanta NASCAR fans, the early line of the forecast for the Cracker Barrel 500 is rain. Still, that’s two weeks away, and a lot can change between now and then.
