Colder Than Normal March in Georgia?

The early National Weather Service forecast for March has arrived, and similar to many of the other predictions I’ve been hearing, we’re likely to experience colder than normal weather.

The Climate Prediction Center predicts about a 33% lower than normal temperature probability for March in an area stretching from Texas to North Carolina, and a 40% chance of lower than normal temps for South Texas, South Georgia, and North Florida. Warmer than normal temperatures are expected in the Northwest quadrant of the country.

This scenario, which is in line with other forecasts I’ve heard, results from the fact that the effects of the weak El Nino pattern we have seen this winter continues to diminish. In addition, ocean temperatures close to shore in the Southeast are colder than normal. The forecast is also based in part on what happened in similar years in the past.

As far as precipitation goes, it looks like Southern California and other Southwestern states could have continued wet weather, with drier weather expected in the Pacific Northwest. Throughout the Eastern half of the country, there are equal chances of above or below normal rain or snowfall.

In the short term, things certainly look more like January than late February. With the exception of warmer weather on Monday and Tuesday, the long range forecast calls for highs in the low 50s and lows around freezing — what I call typical winter weather.
